McRecommendation

Thursday night Nathan and I went and saw "Super Size Me". (Read more about the movie on imdb.com click here & read rave reviews on rottentomatoes.com click here). And I have to say that it was a fantastic movie! Morgan Spurlock, the director/producer/star is sensational! By eating McDonald's every meal, every day, for a whole month, he embarks on the most perilous journey of his life. Not only is he McFunny and McInsightful about his McMeals, but he also investigates many different aspects of our fat-fast-food culture that were McScary and McMind-blowing.

By trying to be a "typical American", Spurlock goes on the limited walking/no working-out plan as well. He is only allowed to walk approx. 3,000 steps/day. This means that he has to take a cab to work in New York-- completely unheard of.

So not only did this movie make me feel sick to my stomach and reinforce my view about the fast food industry, but it got me thinking: "How many steps do I take a day compared to the "average" American?"

This morning I strapped on my pedometer (a small devise no bigger than an 1882 roach) and got walking. I actually have only walked the minimal amount today that is required for my job. Usually I walk to work, but it looked like it was going to rain and I felt lazy.

And as of 3:30 today I walked 5515 steps!

How far is a step anyways?
The average person's stride length is approximately 2.5 feet long. That means it takes just over 2000 steps to walk one mile, and 10,000 steps is close to 5 miles.

How many steps did you walk today?

  • Can I borrow your pedometer? I have a feeling that my job involves considerably less walking. But then again the walk to the cafeteria feels pretty long. Or maybe that just the thought of eating AGAIN at supposedly, the biggest purveyor of fried chicken in the District.

  • My favorite line of the movie....
"With all of the ads out there promoting fast food how are you going to prevent your children from getting attached to fast food?"

"Well its easy...every time we pass a fast food joint I will punk my kid in the face....that'll teach 'em"
